An easy way to think of Perennials - its life cycle is more than one season. These are your plants that come back year after year. Some can be easily divided and some will spread on their own. 

Some examples of Perennials are:

Allium, Black Eyed Susan, Coneflower, Hostas, Hellebores(lenton rose), Lavender, Nepeta(catmint), Shasta Daisy, Iris, Peony, Clemantis, Phlox, Salvia
